The African Mamas

Brenda Fassie was één van die artiesten, met hits als ‘Kuyoze Kuyovalwa’ en het emotionele ‘Too Late For Mama’. Ook na haar doorbraak als artiest is ze in de townships blijven wonen. Bushi Mlongo schreef vooral nummers over het dagelijks leven in Soweto en stond erom bekend meestal blootvoets het podium te betreden. Haar vaak scherpe teksten werden beloond met een verbanning uit haar geboorteland, die ze deels in Nederland heeft doorgebracht. Ook Hugh Masekela heeft een groot gedeelte van zijn leven in ballingschap doorgebracht, maar natuurlijk kennen we hem vooral van een groot aantal indrukwekkende hits, zoals waaronder ‘Stimela (Coal Train)’, ‘Don’t Go Lose It Baby’ en ‘Bring Him Back Home’. Last but not least het duo Letta Mbulu en Caiphus Semenya, met onsterfelijke nummers als ‘Nomalanga’ en ‘Not Yet Uhuru’. 

The African Mamas nemen ons mee op een reis door het Zuid-Afrikaanse muzieklandschap, waarin tal van verschillende muziekstijlen aan bod zullen komen. Met hun tomeloze energie en muzikaliteit maken The African Mamas van elke voorstelling een feest. Een muzikale belevenis die het publiek nog lang bij zal blijven.

In their new show, the African Mamas pay tribute to five remarkable artists: The Big Five of South African music.

Miriam Makeba has brought the music of South Africa to the international music stage in an inimitable manner. Songs like ‘Pata Pata,’ ‘Malaika,’ and ‘The Click Song’ are just a few of her endless list of hits. However, in addition to Mama Africa, several other important and committed South African singers have left their mark on the cultural scene. Brenda Fassie, known for hits like ‘Kuyoze Kuyovalwa’ and the emotional ‘Too Late For Mama,’ was one of those artists. She continued to live in the townships even after her breakthrough as an artist. Bushi Mlongo mainly wrote songs about daily life in Soweto and was known for performing barefoot. She was exiled from her homeland, because of her often sharp lyrics, and she spent those years of exile partly in the Netherlands. Hugh Masekela also spent a significant part of his life in exile, but of course he is mainly known for his impressive list of hits, including ‘Stimela (Coal Train),’ ‘Don’t Go Lose It Baby,’ and ‘Bring Him Back Home.’ And last but not least, the duo Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya, known for immortal songs like ‘Nomalanga’ and ‘Not Yet Uhuru.’
