The Asten Aa in Ommel
The river Aa was channelised along almost its entire 50-km length between 1960 and 1970, except for the stretch in this nature reserve. The river meanders through this area over a length of 2 kilometres.
The stream, which is contaminated with agricultural wastewater, floods this reserve irregularly, resulting in coarsening vegetation. Species such as cleavers, large nettles and cow parsley now predominate in the forest as a consequence. The area is freely accessible via roads and trails. A red route of 5 km starts in Asten-Ommel at the end of the Busserdijk. The area is difficult to access during wet seasons.
