Harrie F. Swinkels
Dressed to the nines, his jacket buttoned and tie firmly knotted. His hands folded over each other, holding in his left hand (most probably) sheet music. That is the image of Harrie F. Swinkels in the Muziektuin in Beek en Donk. A stately portrait of one of the most important conductors in the history of the Koninklijke Harmonie Oefening & Uitspanning. The statue is a tribute to the man who took the Beek and Donk harmony by the hand in the first part of the twentieth century. O&U was founded in 1891. In 1900, Harrie Swinkels, born in 1878, took over the baton from Marjanus van Thiel. Swinkels would remain the conductor of the band for more than fifty years. Under his leadership, O&U grew into a full-fledged orchestra, gained great fame in the region and won several competitions.

The sculpture was made by Lambertus Phillippus Bombeeck, who was born in Helmond in 1895. The concrete statue of the conductor stands on a stone plinth, bearing the year of birth and death of Harrie Swinkels. The statue has been on display for almost sixty years now and actually becomes more beautiful every year.
