The artist has named it 'Portal' for several reasons. On the one hand, the name refers to the client, on the other hand to the entrance of the social-cultural center.
In addition, the image is reminiscent of a harp or a lyre, an association that fits well with the various musical activities that take place in De Ruchte. 'Portal', however, must mainly be seen as an intermediate area between the openness of the spatial environment and the relative seclusion of the social-cultural center.

There are various points of connection with the architecture of De Ruchte. For example, the horizontal bar runs obliquely upwards from the short to the long upright. If this line is continued, it will end up at the top of the ground floor of De Ruchte. In addition, there is the interplay of lines with the doorposts of De Ruchte.
By placing the high side of the artwork, parallel to Laan ten Roode, on the edge of the light sidewalk surface, various interesting viewing angles have been created.
