September 18 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Lieshout and Mariahout, according to a letter sent by then-Mayor Mostermans to the Queen's Commissioner in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Of course, final peace and liberation was not achieved until 5 May 1945, and in the intervening months the Netherlands and also this region were still faced with the necessary misery.

It is well known, that recording local history is one of the objectives of Heemkundekring Hof van Liessent. Fifty years after the liberation, in 1994, the society published the book ‘Lieshout out of harm's way’. Information and stories of local people were recorded by a war documentation working group of the society. The book was written by Drs.Willy van Osch.

Using the book as a guide, an exhibition was put together. The archives of the Heemkundekring and information and photos from private individuals were also used.
