The guides will lead you for a public walk through the forests of Het Gerecht, ‘t Lijnt and de Hei, in the north of the municipality of Laarbeek and the connecting area of the municipality of Meierijstad. The walk starts at the end of the Schaapsdijk in Mariahout, just past the farm at No 1, 5738 RR Mariahout, at the beginning of the forest area and lasts until about two hours.
The nature reserve is so named because a gallows used to stand at the three-village point. Before the year 1800, sentences were carried out there, far from the inhabited world. There are also remains of a Bronze Age burial mound (2000-800 BC). In nearby Erp, stories used to circulate about firemen and witches in ‘t Gerecht. Originally a wet moorland, it was reclaimed in the late 19th century. The rest was planted with woodland laid out on ridges. Many species of plants and trees are found here, including double-leaf (a species of fern), the Serbian spruce, the giant silver fir and the Weymouth pine, known for its cones with fragrant resin. The forests are managed by Brabants Landschap. It leaves the dead wood, good for insects, but making animals like roe deer, squirrels and foxes feel right at home. But you can also observe birds such as tree creepers, nuthatches, tufted titmice, goldcrest, wrens and various kinds of woodpeckers. On the grasslands, blackbirds can forage in wintertime.
