The Grotelse Heide lies on the territory of the municipality of Gemert-Bakel. It is a varied landscape with coniferous forest, deciduous forest, grassland and heathland and, above all, photographic vistas. Like a meandering ribbon, the Esperloop stream meanders through this area, an iron-rich stream with water from the Peelrand fault.
Grotelse Heide offers plenty of surprises. In autumn, various kinds of mushrooms grow, mainly due to the variety of tree species and shrubs. Looking for and finding mushrooms is an art in itself. Some are clearly visible, such as the large umbrella mushroom, but try finding an orange moss disc, an antler mushroom or a devil's egg!
Several species of birds live in the area throughout the year. Well-known at this time of year are tits, woodpeckers and the nuthatch, for example. Part of the Grotels forest is even called the ‘woodpecker forest’.
The guides of IVN Laarbeek hope to observe many species with you. Have an enjoyable and species-rich walk! Oh, yes, sturdy walking shoes or boots are no luxury.
