Street Art - Lucas Gassel on the Library Wall

This mural intertwines the past with the present. Helmond as a textile city – with Vlisco as its showpiece – and as the birthplace of the 16th-century painter Lucas Gassel.

From a distance, you’ll see that the mural depicts a spread-out dress with a rolling landscape as its print. It’s a nod to Vlisco’s unique, colorful fabrics, which are primarily worn in Africa, and to Gassel’s paintings, which focused mainly on landscapes. As you get closer, you’ll discover figures from Gassel’s works. Here are a few we’ve highlighted for you:

• Eagle: Collaboration between Koos van Cleve and Lucas Gassel. St. John on Patmos (1525). The eagle is the symbol of the evangelist John.
• Winding road on the woman’s hip: Pyramus and Thisbe (1540-1550)
• Man with a wooden leg: Panoramic Landscape with the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan (1560)
