Versmacht?
Aldermen Corstens and Van Dooren walked together with doctor Douven and surgeon Reijnardt to the Aa-house near the Erp bridge. No, not to enjoy a pint together on the banks of that beautifully meandering little river, but to examine the dead body of Hendrikus Verbeek.
‛We noted a small wound on the forehead, the size of a pea, some blood that had drained from the nose, and a distended abdomen and chest. Our conclusion is that Verbeek was choked by the water; after all, his dead body was retrieved from the Aa.'

Smothered? Drowned? Here we must protest seriously, gentlemen. Are you sure you haven't first downed a few strong pints in the Aa house? Because that hole as big as a pea, in combination with that bloody nose, shows a completely different scenario. Verbeek was popped, liquidated, killed and then chucked into the Aa, I tell you. A swollen belly you get, if you have been in the water for a while, anyway. And maybe the man was shot somewhere on the bank, fell into the water and inhaled his last breath and took in a lot of water.
No, there's a killer running around here somewhere and he needs to be found.
