The remains of a unique peat area with fens, swamps, canals, forests and special plants. Known for its peat extraction as described in books by Toon Kortooms and others and as one of the richest bird areas in Western Europe.

Former peat colonies and now protected village views, located against the nature reserves of Deurnese Peel and Mariapeel. Griendtsveen is a picturesque village with canals and drawbridges and the so-called apostle houses. On the outskirts of Helenaveen, a gold Roman officer's helmet was found in 1910 by a peat cutter, which can now be viewed in the Rijksmuseum in Leiden. A small monument has been erected at the site (47) (N13).
