It is an area with forests, wet and dry heathland and fens.
There used to be many fens on both sides of Mariahout. Street names like Meerven, Knapersven, Bosven and Rietven still bear witness to this. The Torrenven was in danger of silting up and has been restored since 1992. Around the fen, new plant growth arose from old seeds and plant remains that were deeper in the soil. After restoration, many species managed to re-establish themselves here, including some rare ones such as marsh deer hawk, fen whitethroat, and the viviparous lizard. You can also hear several bird species, such as tree pipit, tree lark, woodpeckers, nightjar and collared redstart. In 2019, the Vossenbergven was also restored. The surrounding heathland has also been restored by removing forest and ploughing the soil. This has restored suitable habitat for some species of heathland. To encourage the spread of sun-loving species, a heathland corridor has also been created.
