The largest water castle in the Netherlands, Helmond Castle has been a prominent feature in the center of Helmond for nearly 700 years. This historic city castle weaves an intriguing tale of the noble families Van Berlaer, Van Cortenbach, Van Arberg, and Wesselman from Helmond, encompassing centuries of power, love, conflict, and betrayal.

Built in the fourteenth century, with initial construction likely occurring between 1325 and 1350, the castle was home to the lords of Helmond for many generations. It was transformed into a town hall in 1922, following a design by J. W. Hanrath. Today, the castle hosts the Kunsthal Museum Helmond and serves various municipal functions, including the Council Chamber and the Wedding Hall.

The castle originally featured a rectangular courtyard surrounded by three wings. The corners were marked by round, projecting towers with seventeenth-century spires. The northern wing was added in the sixteenth century, and the southern facade once had a drawbridge.

Once encircled by a double moat, only the moat around the building remains today. The adjoining park, once much larger, has shrunk due to Helmond's industrial expansion and the construction of the Traverse road.
