Canal Walk

This walk takes you along several remarkable industrial buildings, manufacturer’s villas, and architectural and artistic structures built on both sides of the canal during the 19th and 20th centuries. Together, they paint a picture of Helmond's fascinating industrial past.

The walk is a production of Helmond Marketing, created with the collaboration of city guide Jan van Bussel and city historian Giel van Hooff.

History and industry go hand in hand on this route along Helmond’s canal. The canal, the Zuid-Willemsvaart, flows through the heart of Helmond, dividing the city center into east and west. It offers a vivid picture of Helmond's intriguing industrial life.

Walkers will learn a lot along the way. The 25 landmarks demonstrate that an impressive amount of Helmond’s history has been preserved. The first landmark, located at the quay near the Cacaofabriek, is a crane runway from 1928, an idle relic from a bygone era.

The walk also provides insights into the present. The dyeing machines of the canal-side textile factories Vlisco and Raymakers are still in full operation. Similarly, Nedschroef, a producer of fasteners, continues its production along the canal. The manufacturing industry remains vibrant in the heart of Helmond.

As you walk, you’ll pass the castle with its sculpture park and the lively Havenplein, bustling with terraces.
