Son and Breugel were merged into one municipality by Napoleon. Until the 20th century, it remained a small village governed by a few rich farmers, who played ball with each other when it came to important posts and who kept their government firmly in their hands through marriage among equals. With the reclamation of the Son heathland from 1910 onwards, the number of inhabitants grew and the farmers slowly but surely lost their power. Best used to have a chapel on the spot where Saint Odulphus is said to have been born, but church services still took place in Oirschot. When people in Best started to hold church services themselves, this was a thorn in Oirschot's side. At one point, this led to a robbery during a mass, during which mass supplies and money were stolen. The neo-Gothic St. Odulphus Church was built on the spot where the chapel stood, but it dates from 1882, long after the robbery. Lieshout is known for the Brabant Dialect Festival. Every two years, a festival is organised in Lieshout for everyone who contributes to spreading, preserving or recording the Brabant dialect, with dozens of singers, storytellers and theatre companies.
