IVN Laarbeek holds a lecture: Gallen, a fascinating topic in the IVN building.
This lecture will be held by Gerard Compiet.
Many people encounter galls in their garden or during a walk and may want to know more about them. IVN-Laarbeek is therefore organising this lecture. In this lecture, Gerard Compiet will talk about what galls are, what species exist and where they occur. But he will also discuss advantages and disadvantages for the trapper and the host.

One of the best-known galls in our country is probably the gall apple. This is a marble-shaped proliferation on an oak leaf. You can find this gall particularly in autumn. It is also often beautifully coloured. Galls occur not only on leaves, but also on roots, stems, flowers and fruits of plants, yes, even on mushrooms. Such a gall consists of extra tissue, so-called proliferative tissue, which the plant develops as a result of the action of an organism attacking the plant. These gall-causing organisms include insects, mites, fungi, bacteria, viruses, etc.
Gerard Compiet is a versatile nature photographer, member of several nature associations such as IVN Asten-Someren, the KNNV, Brabants Landschap and some national nature organisations. He grew up in the valley of the Astense Aa and spent a lot of time as a child by this beautiful stream with its many meanders. Gerard worked in education for over 40 years and has always felt the need to share his knowledge with others. Everything to do with nature is his passion. He even writes stories about it.
After this lecture, you can go on a discovery tour in the world of galls right from next spring.
